Ever since Kevin Pietersen’s book titled, ‘KP’ hit the stands, the author has made more news than the book itself. His quotes from the book are selling like hot buns as the former England batsman sent a tirade after tirade in his new biography.
The South African-born was axed early this year after a horrendous performance against Australia in the Ashes series where they lost 5-0. Since then, the English team has gone for a makeover with the likes of Andy Flower and Kevin Pietersen taking the exit door. But none the less, Pietersen’s attack on his former mates and coach sends out a clear signal that the former was not welcomed into the team.
Amongst all, KP wrote a scathing attack on Andy Flower describing the latter as a power-crazy coach, who presided over a regime of bullying and “had it in for me” throughout his five-year reign in charge of the national side. Besides the Zimbabwean, Kevin also wrote on wicket-keeper batsman Matt Prior describing the latter as ‘bad influence who picked on players’.
He writes, “He was portrayed to be the peacemaker, but he was embarrassing in Australia. He didn’t help himself with the way he conducted himself and manipulated the dressing room. I’ve drawn this horrible stigma that has been attached to me about being selfish, about being Billy Big-Shot – when I look around the dressing room I just think if there was a podium for egos, I wouldn’t be on the podium. That’s why I needed to put the record straight.”
Pietersen, who played in 104 tests and also went on to captain England in an unsuccessful stint, has been receiving flak from former players and pundits for the book. Even as his former teammates tagged Pietersen as unfriendly especially in the dressing room, the former’s book might not be an act of fiction after all as cited by Graeme Swann. Over the years, top players have come out with their thoughts and incidents in a factual fashion penned in their books and Kevin Pietersen’s work remains one of them.
