Happy Birthday Virendra Sehwag…
‘The Nawab of Najafgarh’, Virender Sehwag turns 36 today!
Virender Sehwag has amassed a lot of runs, with most of them coming in fours and sixes at the top of the order. ‘Viru’ was always a menace in the minds of the opposition bowlers as the former always attacked from the word ‘go’.
Even though, Sehwag doesn’t find a place in today’s Team India; the Delhi icon is still considered as nation’s best batsman ever produced and moreover, holds the record of highest score in the ODI format. Now, can anybody beat that?
Looking back at his glorious career, Virender has played numerous innings that took our breath away with sheer power and tenacity. We take a look back at his 5 knocks that stood top of the charts:
146 vs. Sri Lanka (2009/10)
One of the best ODI games ever played, India and Sri Lanka played out a thriller that involved runs, centuries and excitement! Even though T. Dilshan top scored 160 in that match, it was Virender Sehwag’s 146 that led India’s battle towards a score of 414. MS Dhoni’s men went onto win the match by 3 runs as ‘Viru’ was awarded the man of the match.
103 vs. New Zealand (2003/04)
Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag share a 182-run stand as Team India steam rolled over New Zealand in the TVS Cup held at Hyderabad. The Kiwis were bundled out for a paltry 208 due to some exceptional bowling performances from Zaheer Khan and the spinners. Sehwag was at it yet again as the Delhi-lad ran away the top honours.
99* vs. Sri Lanka (2010/11)
Virender Sehwag has always loved performing against the Lankans and here he was again, scoring an unbeaten 99 that included 11 fours a two sixes. Sri Lanka had been bundled over at 170 but with Sehwag’s blistering attack, India took just 34.3 overs to reach the small total.
175 vs. Bangladesh (2011 ICC Cricket World Cup)
India started off their World Cup journey with a bang as they shrugged off the Bangladesh test with ease much thanks to Virender Sehwag’s 175 at the top of the order. Thanks to that ton, India posted a mammoth 370 and in reply, Bangladesh could only muster 283 as the Men In Blue took revenge of that shock defeat in the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies.
219 vs. West Indies (2011-12)
Coming into the game, no one had predicted Virender Sehwag’s superhuman effort could just blow the Men from the Caribbean. Sehwag scored a blistering 219 beating the record held by Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar against South Africa as the former went on to become the highest scorer in ODIs format.
