Well this is not the first time that Punjab’s Prince, Yuvraj Singh has proved his point of making a comeback (rewind to 14th November, 2008 – 138* vs. England in Rajkot). Times have changed for the south paw who was last seen in the Indian ODI colours on 27th January, 2013 vs. England and was chucked out of the squad that won the ICC Champions Trophy in England. But on Sunday, we saw the old Yuvraj Singh, who smashed a blistering century against a high quality West Indies attack.
His knock of 123 was just of 89 balls that included 23-run-over of spinner Nikita Miller who was sent to the cleaners by Yuvraj Singh. He said, “I think I have worked hard in my off-season on my batting and other skills in last couple of weeks,” he said.
His training in France with ex-teammate Zaheer Khan also came in handy. In the post match comments he said,”I was always quick on the field and I just worked on those aspects and I am feeling better.” He also went on to shower praises on his trainer Tim Exeter who helped him get back in shape.
So is there a way back for Yuvi in the Indian squad? He adds, “Boss, I have got an opportunity to play. I don’t know whether it is four-day match and Test cricket I am just happy I am playing and scoring runs. I don’t know what is going to happen in the future,” he said.
The fact is Yuvraj likes challenges and that brings the best out of him. Remember the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup in South Africa? Before the 6-sixes, Yuvi was ‘taunted’ by all-rounder Andrew Flintoff and the rest was history. The same can be said during the 2011 World Cup when Yuvraj was criticised for his performances and it the end, he walked away with the Man of the Tournament award.
Yuvraj is relishing the challenge of being dropped. Unlike others (Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh), Yuvi has trained well and his century yesterday proved that no wall can deter his chances.
With two more games to go, Yuvraj has set his sights on reclaiming what’s his – Team India cap.
