That’s what Shikhar Dhawan did when he played a fine captain’s innings of 71 to guide his team, the Sunrisers Hyderabad to a convincing eight-wicket win over Kandurata Maroons with nine balls to spare in the second qualifying match of the Champions League Twenty20 at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium.
Skipper Dhawan along with partner Parthiv Patel (52 off 42 balls) set the tone for the chase with their 121-run first wicket stand helping the side reach the total of 169 with ease.
With more matches to come, Shikhar Dhawan is relishing the challenges that are put forward to him. The Sunrisers Hyderabad look clear favourites to land a spot in the Group stages, but in cricket anything is possible.
Dhawan says, “This was a totally a new experience for me as a captain. It was my first day as captain so I have a lot to learn. I will make a lot of mistakes, and have to learn from them. It is part and parcel of the captaincy.”
Even though he may not admit it but Dhawan’s rise to international cricket has been a phenomenon since his Test debut this year and if he goes onto win the CLT20, we may see a new name on the horizon which may even shove the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma aside.
