If you’re 17 years and 364 days old and contemplating a heinous crime, I suggest you do it before midnight. You know, before turning major. Because in our country, juveniles enjoy more power than all the netas put together. You can rape, maim and murder, yet you’ll walk out a free man after serving 3-4 years in jail. You may be old enough to commit the crime, but not old enough to bear its punishment. Ah, law. Love this subject…

It’s a pity that in crimes as gruesome and heinous as gang-rape, the judgement is based on age and not the act. The ‘minor’ will be sent to a correction home for a mere three years, while the family of the murdered 23-year-old has to re-live the tragedy for the rest of their lives. What sort of a justice is this for the mother whose young daughter was mercilessly preyed upon by hooligans? This just shows that ‘Nirbhaya’, who fought till the very end died in vain. All the protests, candle-light vigils and country wide anger look like props in an elaborate play whose screenplay has been screwed up by the government.
Taking a cue from this pansy punishment, one of the accused in the recent Mumbai gang-rape tried to pass off as a minor too. So what does this tell you about our system? If you, a minor, has the capacity to commit a crime that nobody can even fathom, you’re just a kid who needs to be ‘corrected’ more than punished. So that we can breed more such youngsters in the country and set an example for the world. Blah.
In a country that’s demanding the public hanging of rapists, we’re meting out such judgements. Ha! It will definitely make our country look oh-so stupid and spineless. Banning porn, prostitution or stopping women from stepping out after 8 pm isn’t the solution. The only way to stop crime against women is to hand over such a punishment that anybody thinking about this act will first s**t in his own pants. Else everybody will turn a juvenile and live off the government for a couple of years.
