The annual QS world university rankings by subject are a comprehensive guide to the world’s top universities in a range of popular subject areas.
British Quacquarelli Symonds publishes the rankings, which was initially in an association with Times Higher Education. QS World University Rankings is one of the three most influential and widely observed international rankings and is referred to, for admissions from the international sector of students.
While IIT Mumbai has emerged as the best institute in India and has overtaken its contemporary IIT Delhi for the first time, none of the universities are listed in the top 200 in the world.
The QS University rankings in academics, lists two leading IITs (Delhi and Mumbai), University of Delhi, and Indian Institute of Science in top 200.
The ranking system takes into account research quality, graduate employment, student staff ratios, teaching standards, international collaborations and a number of other factors. However, the biggest single factor in QS rankings is academic reputation, which is calculated by surveying more than 60,000 academics around the world about their opinion on merits of their institution other than where they belong.
The thing to be taken into consideration here is that, very few out of 60,000 academicians think about our education system positively. While the government has been taking measures to reinstate old, and world renowned universities like Nalanda, the question that needs to be taken into consideration is that our education system is still not upgraded, and being well trained and well educated are not synchronous in our education system. Universities like Harvard and Stanford, rank among the top fifty in the world, we lag by more than one hundred and fifty universities around the world.
Dr Karthick Sridhar, vice chairman of Indian Centre for Assessment and Accreditation quotes, “With the increasing globalization of higher education, Indian universities need to compete to attract the best students, as well as best qualified faculty from across the world. Students continue to use rankings as one of their decision making tools to choose their educational destination.”
With trust on world rankings increasing among students, it’s high time that the government takes necessary steps to improve the education sector in India.
