As a result of the UGC report the status of 41 deemed universities that had initially failed to safeguard their status of being deemed, the HRD ministry will now decide whether to let them carry forward their ‘˜deemed ‘˜ status.
Only a few days back, the Supreme Court of India ordered the University Grants Commission (UGC) to carry out physical verification of 41 deemed universities.
As a result of the UGC report the status of 41 deemed universities that had initially failed to safeguard their status of being deemed, the HRD ministry will now decide whether to let them carry forward their ‘deemed ‘ status.
The ministry has to thoroughly investigate the matter keeping in mind the recommendations of the UGC report and also the judgements that are coming right from the Supreme Court, the latter having already ordered a physical verification of infrastructure and academic quality of seven among the 41 blacklisted universities.
The only thing to be considered here is that, the UGC report mentioned that among the 41 universities only 7 should be stripped off from their deemed status, while the remaining can enjoy their status for the time being. However, the ministry has decided to scrutinize all the 41 universities as they were found to be unfit for ‘deemed’ status by the Tandon Committee in 2009.
Even if the ministry allowed the other 34 universities to function normally, it would be considered an inappropriate step, as no action would be taken on them. They are reviewing the reports suggested by Tandon Committee (in 2009), Officers Committee (in 2011) and the latest UGC report.
The ministry could also introduce a few committees to carry out physical verification of these universities as per Supreme Court’s order, and not blindly follow UGC’s recommendation to let the other 34 universities carry their proceedings as ‘deemed’.
With the recent case of IIPM and other colleges that lacked affiliation from a higher studies board, it is mandatory that the decision should be made after proper verification and running of the universities.
