It’s been just two weeks since you joined the new company. You have a good experience of the job profile, which is why you were added as a member of the team, which mostly has masculine brains. Though you’ve worked with a situation like this earlier, you are finding it tough to incorporate the ways you did things in your previous organization. We suggest a few ways you can position yourself in the team. Read on..
1. You’re as good as others
Understand that there is a reason for you to be the only woman on the team. You are as good as any of them. You possess the same skills or talents, maybe even more, as the others on the team. So get in the tough mold and let your ideas take shape. Communication with colleagues comes once, you’re confident about your work. Also, if they take your politeness for granted, it’s time you started being a hard nut.
2. Sizing your worth
Have you noticed what do men love to mention while in a conversation? Facts. When two men, be it fellow employees or friends, they go all on facts about football, cricket, music, restaurants and whatever else. Also, when talking to them, make sure not to lose the conversation. Now, you know what to make a strong point, when you’re the only one on the team.
3. Quit the good girl image
Remember when you were taught to appear perfect? Appearing perfect, never meant that you don’t open the cards. Though you knew the answer, you never raised your hand in the class. Why? Because there was a chance that the answer could be wrong. That, is not ‘appearing perfect’. Never, use the same philosophy, in your professional life. That may give your male peers get more credit for having good ideas. Learn to speak up authoratively.
4. Conflicting is an art
There is no corporate without conflicts. Yes, you don’t want to appear as one of those extra-makeup woman in daily soaps on T.V. But, let me tell you that peaceful confrontations never leave an impact. So, when you get to know all about the game, make your rules and play it ruthlessly. Get to the source of the conflict. Speak authoratively, with thunder, and let them know what metal are you made up of. Go girl! Lead them in the right direction. Show them what you are.
5. Avoid ‘Um-ing’
You can’t deny that we, the feminine, population tend to ‘Um’ more than the othersex. Make sure that you don’t use words which make you sound unsure. This might give them a chance to judge you as insecure or even stupid. So, if you feel that you need to work on your speaking habits, record your speaking while rehearsing and figure out what you need to work on. Also, make a note of the way you present yourself.
Proving yourself in this male dominated world, could be a tough job. But, you know that when you are the only one on the team, you definitely posses the same or better qualities as they do. You were decided to be on this team, because your recruiter knew of your potentials. So, go prove them right.
