When it comes to professionalism it becomes really difficult to manage people older than you, but junior to you at work. We see how to deal with situations and people who are older than you at workplace.
I was 22 when I got my first job.
Like any other fresher, I was all excited to be a part of the new workplace.
New experiences, new people to meet, seniors, I would know why did my seniors speak ill of their managers, and everything that a newly graduated thinks of.
My job was prgressing quite wnderfully, until one day a lady almost twenty years senior to me, asked me how old was I and if I was old enough to be a part of the organization. The age references kept coming, and though there were a number of freshers who were from my batch, I was the only one to be doubted regarding my age.
When it comes to professionalism it becomes really difficult to manage people older than you, but junior to you at work. We see how to deal with situations and people who are older than you at workplace.
Value everyone
Like our elders have taught us to, no matter if the person is senior to you or junior, valuing what everyone has to say is one of the greatest traits of professionalism. If the person is older than you, he/she does not have to be wiser, but definitely has more experience than you. The beter rapo you have with all of your team members, the more will you leadership be effective and appreciated.
Result oriented procedures
Maybe the oldest one on your team does not like being intefered with. Because he has worked for quite a long time, his way of working might be different than yours, yet the most effective. You might like sing the latest technology, but the elderly might want to use what they think is the most effective. Why not try rather than force them to use something they find hard to?
Communicate
The best way to get them involved in your team is by communicating. Nobody likes being left out and especially those who possess a great deal of knowledge regarding the subject you’re talking about. You may have the latest technology, but they have knowledge and experience. Getting them involved in a conversation or discussion is a good way to show how much you value them.
Control your emotions
If you’re a senior at workplace and there are people who though elder to you, have to act with your consent, you should behave with your temperament intact. It is no news taht you will have discussions and arguments with those who have been here since long. yet a number of times what they say is right. So rather than asking them to leran everything the younger generation is about, maybe you could learn why they are still in the advisory board, even though it’s been more than a decade since they joined.
Seek what you give
It’s an old saying, you reap what you sow. Maybe you don’t like their ideas or the way they approach a situation. But they are there because of what they have and no matter how much you dislike it, you ought to respect it. Getting respect comes from giving respect. Your workplace is not the place for you to find someone who admires you. It is rather a place where you inspire and get inspired.
You’re young and are a leader. A leader considers the ideology of everyone with him. So no matter, what you think of people older than you at work, or what they think of you, devote your leadership qualities into performing better and setting an example.
