An exponential increase in environmental pollution has led to various research and innovative works in order to check the menace of environmental degradation. The new field of engineering is popularly known as Environmental engineering.
That, our environment is degrading at a fast pace is not a lie. That, we, the human race is solely responsible for the degradation of the environment is not a lie. That, we, the supreme of all the species form a major contribution in the depletion of natural resources is not a lie. And, that, only we, can help the reformation and utilisation of our resources in a proper way, to make the world a place for our future generation to live, is not a lie.
An exponential increase in environmental pollution has led to various research and innovative works in order to check the menace of environmental degradation. The new field of engineering is popularly known as Environmental engineering. We give you a briefing on what does the job involve.
Role of an environmental engineer
An environmental engineer is required to apply combined methods of science and engineering to bring about an improvement suitable for human existence. They specialise in disciplines like basic sciences, ecology, anthropology, social sciences and radiology science. And now that they are engineers they also possess knowledge about civil, mechanical and other engineering branches. A qualified engineer in this discipline working for an environmental engineering firm is expected to design, construct and maintain waste management systems so that urban, semi-urban and rural areas are kept healthy.
Qualification
I personally believe that one does not really need a qualification to keep your planet clean. But as far as developing new instruments and methods to keep it clean and preserved, is concerned, you are required to take a deep insight into the subjects. Environmental Engineering as a discipline can be studied at both, undergraduate and postgraduate level. A candidate should have Science as a major in HSC to apply for B.Sc or a B. Tech in this field. For those who take up civil engineering for graduation, M.Tech is an option to specialise in this field.
Job prospects
This is the only field of engineering that shares an equally good scope in India and abroad. Professionals from process engineering, water and sewage treatment, waste reduction management, pollution prevention, etc are required not only in the chemical factories but also in the corporate field.
Job prospects for professionals with qualification in environmental engineering are bright in research centres, NGOs and various governmental departments working towards green development. Candidates who possess a specialisation in this field (during masters) have opportunities to work for government, and study and analyse various conditions at places.
Environmental Engineering is a promising career that is still at a nascent stage. Gaining popularity with every passing day, this field is expected to grow exponentially in the coming years. As much as I hate to say this, but this field also involves a decent amount of moolah. Ya, right! Your income comes from you making the world a better place for your descendants to live in. Doesn’t that sound amazing?
