There was a time when people used to think that those who make it into law are one of their kind. However, today a career in law has become one of the most sought options among the youth. The increasing demand for good lawyers stands for the credit.
From writers to politicians to freedom fighters, lawyers have donned many hats since years. I still remember watching movies made during the sixties and seventies, most of which had the protagonist potraying a barrister. Funky, eh?
Having met quite a number of people from this field, I feel, to pursue a career in law you need to have passion for the same. Owing to a limited number of colleges that provide you quality education in law, the competition to get through has become equally tough.
Traditionally, students can specialise in either civil or criminal laws. However, the concept has changed and now students opt to specialise in a plethora of options offered like patent laws, corporate laws etc. A degree in law not only lets you practice as a lawyer in a court but also opens up career options in sectors like corporate management, legal services and administrative services.
Eligibility
If you’re interested in adding another qualification next to your name, like B.A., L.L.B; a three year course is best for you. The 3 year course is suitable for those who already possess a graduation in some other subject but want LLB as an additional qualification. The five year course is meant for those who want to take up law as a career – as a litigator or any other kind of legal professional. Internship is also a very important part of this job profile.
Entrance
You can take the national law entrance exam, CLAT- Combined Law Admission Test right after you are done with SSC. The entrance exam basically tests the student’s general english, legal aptitude, general awareness, logical skills, etc.
Studying abroad
To pursue an LLM from U.K. or any other country abroad, the first thing you need to do is to take TOEFL or IELTS test, as universities usually ask you for your scores in these. However, there is good percentage of chance that if you speak with the college and inform them about your medium of studies being English throughout, they might waive the TOEFL/IELTS and give you an unconditional admission.
Job Prospects
You could either practice as an advocate in a law court or work with corporate firms. By clearing exams conducted by Public Service Commissions, a law graduate can become a judge. You could also work as a legal advisor for private organisations.
Many of the law firms in U.K. or abroad don’t really care if you have a LL.M. or not. Their hiring decision is not made on the basis of LL.M but on the basis of the LL.B and your relevant work experience. The work experience mentioned,is in relation with the law firm’s area of expertise.
An acute shortage of qualified lawyers is a major problem in India. We are a country with one of the highest litigation rates among its population. Now you know why talented lawyers never worry/have to worry about their income.
