Career In Veterinary Medicine: Of Servitude, Passion And Love For The Other Kind

Being a veterinarian requires a lot of patience and that is something that does not come JUST from the love for animals. We tell you all about a career in veterinary medicine.

When I was small, I would bring home a baby goat from somewhere near to our house and tie it to a tree with a string. I would feed it, and play with it and then untie the string and let it go.

An year or two later, my grandfather brought home a puppy. I was elated. I would play with it, make it bark, show my friends how the puppy would follow what I asked it to do, sneak away from my room in the night to say goodnight to it and then jump out of my bed to see it at the start of my day. Such is my love for animals.

While I always wanted to be a doctor, my compassion for animals never really made me think about being a veterinary doctor. It is now I realize that it was for my own good that I did not. Being a veterinarian requires a lot of patience and that is something that does not come JUST from the love for animals.

Of course, that is a major factor that contributes, but that’s not everything. We tell you all about a career in veterinary medicine.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a Bachelor in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, a candidate should have passed the class 12 examination in science subjects with Biology as a major. The Veterinary Council of India conducts an All India Common Entrance Examination for admission in BVSc & AH for four years course plus one year of internship.

Qualifications

A veterinarian should have genuine love for animals. Note that the thing that has to be healed here is not a human. Your aptitude and patience is highly needed in healing beings, which cannot talk. Working with large animals require stamina and quick body reflexes to tackle the animal’s behaviour.

Job prospects

The veterinary field, as it sounds is a little tough to pursue, but once you have started, you’re probably going to love your job. After a student graduates, he or she can opt for a post graduation in a particular specialization or Ph. D in specialized areas like surgery, anthology or medicine. You can even go for the job of a livestock development officer. Apart from being employed with a government hospital you could run a private veterinary hospital. The Army and Border Security Forces also employ veterinarians for the care and treatment of animals they have with them.

Pay Package

The pay package of a veterinary doctor varies on the basis of his practice and the animals under his treatment. Fresh graduates who are appointed as junior surgeons in government hospitals have their salary ranging from Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000. However, once you’ve gained experience, you may get lucrative monetary returns depending on your popularity and period of experience.

When trying to decide whether you want to opt for this career, remember that though they are animals they need as much care and love as the humans do. Just as with the humans, animals need to have preventive healthcare to keep them healthy and happy.
