Skoda India has rolled out a Special Edition of its mid-sized Rapid sedan, called the Skoda Rapid Altima with prices starting at Rs 8.30 lakh and going up to Rs 9.97 lakh. (Both prices are ex-showroom, New Delhi).

The Special Edition Skoda Rapid Altima features the company’s newly refurbished company logo, which is in tune with the Czech’s automaker’s global brand positioning and is now placed in the centre of the bonnet. The Special Edition Rapid has also been loaded with some additional features such as parking sensors with a rear view camera, Garmin and Tom Tom navigation devices, among others.

The Special Edition Skoda Rapid Altima will be offered in both diesel and petrol variants and will be available on sale across all Skoda dealerships in India for a limited period of time. Both the petrol and diesel engines displaces the same engine capacity of 1.6-litre and produces an identical power output of 105PS. The torque is naturally higher on the diesel-powered variants.

The C-Segment sedan is positioned between the Skoda Fabia and the Laura and is heavily based on the Volkswagen Vento. However, the Rapid’s front fascia, which includes, the headlamps, the grille, the front bumper as well as the hood are completely different from the Vento. At the rear, the boot lid has an additional design line on both sides of the number plate and the insides of the tail lamps are more Skoda-like too. The outer shell for the tail lamp though is identical to the Vento’s. The rest of the car remains unchanged too, and the same is amply clear when one views the Rapid’s side profile.

Inside, things remain the same as well. The dashboard, the AC vents, the door trims and even the climate control interface is identical to the Vento. What’s different though is the steering. However, like the Vento, even the top of the line Elegance trim doesn’t get steering mounted controls. But additionally, unlike the Vento, it’s not leather wrapped either.

Very recently, Skoda India also rolled out the all-new refreshed Superb sedan in the country at a starting price of Rs 18.87 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi). The brand’s flagship model has benefitted from new set of design elements, a fresh exterior and improved technical features. The Superb in India is offered with two engine options – a 1.8 TSI petrol unit and a 2.0 TDI diesel power plant.

Apart from the Rapid and Superb sedans, Skoda’s portfolio in India consists of four other models – the Octavia, Laura, Fabia and the Yeti. The Czech automaker currently has a network of 92 sales and 84 service outlets across the country.

Skoda India has always bet big on its Rapid sedan.

However, due to overall slump in the auto industry, most companies are coming up with special or limited edition models of their respective flagships to bring about a certain nuance in the auto market and give the company sales numbers some sort of push.

And the newly launched Skoda Rapid Altima Special Edition hopes to do just that for the Czech automaker.
