So, what’s so special about ’T’ in Ferrari California you ask?
Well, the ’T’ signifies the induction of a new turbocharged engine and what makes this case special is the fact that for the first time since the legendary F40 and more than a span of 20 years, a turbocharged engine has found its way under the hood of a Ferrari again.
And this turbocharged California T is scheduled to take its first public bow at the upcoming 2014 Geneva Motor Show in March. Ahead of its official presentation though, Ferrari has released the first batch of images and information about the California T on the world wide web.
Since, the highlight of the Ferrari California T is of course, the turbocharged engine, it would be wise for any Ferrari enthusiast to get acquainted with it’s specifications. Under the hood of the California T is the new 3.9-litre turbocharged and direct-injection V8 engine, which is based on the force-fed unit introduced on the Maserati Quattroporte and the Ghibli sedans. Power and torque figures are rated at 560PS and a massive 755Nm respectively. That’s a gigantic jump over the outgoing California model that uses a naturally aspirated 4.3-litre V8 that produces 490PS and 505Nm.
In regards to performance, the Italian automaker claims that the front-engined, rear-wheel drive California T completes the sprint from 0 to 100 kmph in an unbelievable 0.2 seconds with a top speed of 316 kmph. The outgoing California model achieves the said feat in 3.6 seconds. If you think that with the induction of a turbocharged engine, the California T will lose out on the sweet roar of a typical Ferrari machine, then you will be pleasantly surprised when you first hear the music coming out of Ferrari’s new V8 unit.
When fitted with the available ‘HELE’ fuel-saving tech, the California T reportedly, returns a combined fuel consumption of 10.5 litres per 100km on the European cycle, with CO2 emissions of 250g/km, which is down 15 per cent and 20 per cent respectively, over the outgoing model.
In terms of styling, design elements in the California T have been inspired by the F12 Berlinetta, the FF, the 250 Testa Rossa, penned by the Ferrari styling centre with help from Pininfarina, along with the new Turbo Performance Engineer screen.
On the inside, there is redesigned dashboard that sports a new partially digital instrument panel, and a new center console with a 6.5-inch display for the infotainment system featuring both touch-screen and conventional controls.
Post its official unveiling in Geneva next month, the Ferrari California T will go on sale in the international market by the end of 2014.
We so do hope and pray to see at least one example of the California T on the streets of India.
