Imagine blowing off a candle placed on a Rice cake or Idli, Dhokla or even Chicken Tandoori for that matter.

What is the importance of a canteen in your college life?
Not just a place to grab a bite, not just the place you go to while bunking classes, or just a gossip station, much more than that. Is it not?
The students of Konkan Gyanpeeth College in Karjat (approximately 100 kilometres from Mumbai), don’t just utilise their canteen space for eating or gossiping or bunking lectures, but also for the grand celebration of a friend’s birthday.
Remember Pizza Hut? Um. Nothing like that though. But quite close to that. Like any other college, even this college has a canteen, two of them to be precise, but the second one is put to use only during a special occasion or event. Cool, is it not?
The canteen isn’t very new looking or happening, but few dishes served here are just yummy, especially when you’ve travelled a hundred kilometres at 6 in the morning; not that there are many on the menu. Their Misal Pao is something I relished in.
Now, while having my mango shake in the canteen, I noticed a group of students who were celebrating a friend’s birthday with Misal! Seriously, Misal? They were about five of them and the sixth one was totally onto feeding them a spoonful of Misal with Pao after they finished singing the birthday song.
Weird but extraordinary.
Guess, we could try celebrating birthdays in desi style as well.
Imagine blowing off a candle placed on a Rice cake or Idli, Dhokla or even Chicken Tandoori for that matter. Sounds fun, no? I am definitely going to try it the next time, what about you?
