Choose your paints and other supplies wisely
Though there are a lot of oil paints available in the market, be sure to choose your paints wisely. Don’t go for the budget supplies as these might make you painting difficult, tedious and frustrating. Rather go for the ones that make your painting look lively and blends easily when you want it to.
Get brushes of every kind. You would also need a painting palette, linseed or poppy oil to use as a blending medium.
Understand the secrets of your painting
Use a pencil to create a rough sketch of your painting. Make sure that there is adequate amount of light in your workplace. You need to position the canvas at an angle from where you can see the blending of colors as well as patches of light and dark, wherever required.
Create your color palette
Oil paint, as name suggests, takes many days to begin to dry. It becomes quite difficult to mix the same paint twice and get the same effect. So, it will save your time and energy if you mix your paints in large batches and preserve them between painting sessions to always have enough of the right color.
Know what you want to paint
Your painting profoundly describes your imagination. So, while you lift your brush to start, be sure about what you want to paint. Try blending your paints or creating a glaze or stippling to create small dots in between to create a magical effect on your paint.
Finishing touch
As oil painting takes about three to four days to dry up(not completely), you can correct any mistake within that period. Before you decide to wah off the colors from the brushes finally, take a step back and look at your painting in its totality to see if there are changes to be done. Your painting may take 3 days to three months to dry completely, depending on the amount of oil used in the layers. So, make sure to keep it in an airy, mildly sunny and secluded place to dry up.
