The Governor of Delhi notified the inclusion of a transgender child in the admission norms of schools in Delhi, thereby approving their admission under the category of disadvantaged group defined by RTE Act.
Only a month ago, the Delhi University had introduced an option of ‘third gender’ in the admission forms for all post graduate programmes.
In a yet another revolutionary move, the Governor of Delhi notified the inclusion of a ‘transgender’ child in the admission norms of schools in Delhi, thereby approving their admission under the category of “disadvantaged group” defined by the RTE Act.
Bringing an end to their suffering, and giving them a chance to get recognized by the rest, the transgender kids will be made eligible for 25% reservation under the economically weaker section (EWS) and disadvantaged students category, for admission.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by Clause D of Section 2of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, the Lt. Governor of Delhi is pleased to notify inclusion of a transgender child within the meaning of child belonging to disadvantaged group as defined in the mentioned section of RTE Act,” said a notification issued by the Directorate of Education.
The approximate population of the transgender community in India is as much as 4.93 lakhs, as per the census of 2011. Among this population, a huge percentage was denied acceptance into universities or educational institutions, because they did not belong to either of the two mentioned categories.
Earlier this year the University of Delhi had recognized ‘third gender’ as a category and allowed enrolments for post and undergraduate programs.
