What do parents send their children to school for?
To learn. When sending their children to school the parents are ensuring their child’s well being with teachers so that they can teach and take care of the child in a disciplined manner. But does disciplining students mean you take away from them what their true nature is?
Teacher yelling at the top of voice when a student is unable to answer correctly or not paying attention is nothing new to us. It’s not a news that many a children suffer emotionally at school. Not every child is capable to get an A+, or score more than 90% in the exam, or get a medal for being the best student in an academic year. Every child is different. Some even face difficulties in learning, which their parents or teachers are unaware of.
I fondly remember a faculty of mine, who would ask students random questions, most of the times from topics he hadn’t covered in class, when he found the students talking or not paying attention. He would then speak ill of the student, mock his intelligence and ask him to go and take admission in some lower standard. The child would just look down and others wouldn’t dare to look at the teacher, fearing they could be next.
While incorporating things like these, the teacher does not really understand the magnitude of harm caused to the student’s self respect and charm. A teacher is responsible for moulding a student in such a way that he/she excels whichever field they choose to be. Inculcating values cannot be possible unless an example of the same is set for the students. Asking them to be kind, while you yourself tend to mock every action and answer of theirs, is what I consider absurd.
School students are the pillars of a country’s future. Shouldn’t Mocking A Student For Not Being Intelligent Enough, Be Regarded As A Miniature Crime? to the new laws, students should be allowed to pass all standards up to eight, irrespective of their performance in a particular subject. Mocking a student’s intelligence, giving others leverage for he/she was unable to answer a question or asking the student to stand outside the classroom for not giving a right answer, is no way of making them learn.
When will they realize that the wounds of humiliation and disregarding a student’s self respect stays with the student for a lifetime?
