Unceasing lethargy is something I comprehend only too well. As many like me who may, particularly those of us who take uncountable breaks, send anxious texts and calls to cover bases before coming in to the workplace and break open into a meeting with quick apologies.

As per a job search website, the percentage of employees reaching late to work has increased vaguely from 2011. The US-based survey established that 16 percent of employees reach late to work once a week or more. In 2010 timekeeping was high, owing to recession after effects.

1) The tardiness plague

For most of us who pursue the ‘better late than never’ saying, timekeeping is frequently ignored. Timekeeping is undervalued and ignored as an asset particularly by the Gen X of executives. Tardiness is not only an acknowledged conduct but also expected and tolerated.

It’s a vicious circle. If one person arrives late and expects to be pardoned then how can he/she chastise or insist others to be on time. It’s quite a mass understanding of disorderliness that has appeared at the workplace.

2) Timekeeping

Punctuality or lack of it affects how your dedication, dependability and performance are observed by your boss. Behavioural experts perceive it as the first indication of faithfulness towards an organisation. Punctuality is in fact most important for success. It implies that one is good not just at preparation but also in forecasting one’s day and time management – an advantage to any executive, the lack of which has serious repercussions in sluggish personal development, setbacks and disappointments.

Tardiness highly depends upon the company’s culture. Sluggishness is a manifestation of company leadership. Culture is set by the leaders who display behaviours which are repeated in the company.

3) Justifications

From dog hiccups to a governor’s call and even a botox appointment have been told to fob off lateness. But tardiness doesn’t mean they aren’t sincere, as many employees say they were late because of a job interview. Bosses now are flexible about timing, but extreme lateness can get you fired.

4) Time management

Frequent reasons for lateness are traffic, lack of sleep, bad weather and household chores involving children. Other explanations comprise public transportation delays, pets, spouses, TV and internet usage. Time management is not about arranging time, it’s about listing down priorities. The common propensity is to get trapped up in everyday work with things that are imperative, but not always important.

Tardiness is an attitude and personal drive matter. An individual is well aware beforehand that one is going to be late. Studies have proved that for some arriving late is a resistance thing – a kind of revolt against the organisation. The only way out is getting organised and planning ahead. So set the clocks 10 minutes ahead.
