In the year 2014, the films released had female protagonists and they even did good business. This portrays changing tastes of Indian audiences which is a positive development.
Women should be celebrated irrespective of the time or day or date of the year!
However, some celebrations have to be loud and special enough for they indicate golden achievements of women in fields considered to be personal fiefdom of men!
These achievements surely mark the arrival of women with a bang, after overcoming tones of obstacles.
One such area of excellence for women is starring in movies which are women-centric and making sure that they do good business as well! Yes, it isn’t easy for actresses to shoulder the responsibility of an entire movie and make them box-office wonders given the nature of our still male-dominated society. But, then some girls have it in them to rise above the challenges and make their mark.
Let’s talk about the movies which have already made a mark this year with women protagonists.
1) Dedh Ishqiya
The year started with a movie which was a kind of a comeback vehicle for yesteryear’s superstar, Madhuri Dixit. Even though it had Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi in prominent roles, the movie is still talked about for the beautiful and interesting chemistry shared between Madhuri and Huma Qureshi. Women bonding at its best!
2) Gulaab Gang
Here again Madhuri stole the hearts with her kickass performance opposite her once-upon-a-time competitor, Juhi Chawla! Even though the movie didn’t set the cash registers ringing real loud, it showcased two versatile performers giving worthy entertainment to their audience. And yes, the ever smiling Juhi did a convincing job with her first-ever negative role!
3) Queen
This can be easily called the best movie of the year or may be of the last few years simply due to a rock-solid script and even stellar performance by the lead actress, Kangna Ranaut! With no major male lead and not a typical song and dance kind of cinema, Queen still stole the hearts and touched a chord with audiences across all age groups! Kangna has re-established herself as an actress to watch out for who can give the heroes a run for their money!
4) Bobby Jasoos
A detective, that too a female detective! Who could have thought of making such a movie say even 5-6 years back? It shows the maturity of an audience who are ready to accept and embrace subjects as varied as these No doubt, credit also goes to performers who have the caliber to get into the skin of such characters without thinking only about the glamour quotient. Vidya Balan is one such performer who has mastered the art of doing movie which are not run of the mill stuff and does an excellent job at them. Hats off to her efforts!
5) Mardaani
An actress who is past her prime, is not in a good shape, has started looking an ageing female and who just got married, has her work cut out; either gives one last shot at doing some memorable role or sit at home waiting for some good roles to come her way! Rani Mukherji Chopra clearly took the challenge head on and came out a winner! No one expected her to give such mind-blowing performance as a female cop, so real to life, sans any starry air about being a superstar. She became the character and once again showed us all as to why she was considered one of the best actresses of her era! Hell, she is still kickass in this era!
6) Mary Kom
Priyanka Chopra must be on cloud nine after her movie opened to such a fantabulous response all across the country given that her flick is about a female boxer! She gave her blood and sweat to this project and going by the initial numbers, audiences are queuing up to watch the fruit of her labor! It is too early to go into the financials of the movie, but when one wins the hearts, money doesn’t remain such a big issue after all!
7) Khoobsurat
This remake of Rekha’s Khoobsurat will soon be released and going by the trailers, it does looks promising. Even though Sonam Kapoor, who is not considered to be a great actress, will be playing Rekha’s part, we still have a hope that she will do a decent job! Whatever be the result, the important factor is that film-makers are realizing that there is an important market for female-oriented scripts and that the industry does have the talent to rise up to the challenge!
It is not often that in a single year so many movies get released with such female dominated themes. This year surely looks like a lucky year for us, the audiences!
Women power, go get it!
