This used to be my favorite rhyme as a kid. I always preferred it over Twinkle Twinkle (No offense meant Akshay). 😀 It had action, comedy, tragedy and nice rhythm to it.
Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania turns out to be every bit as this rhyme.
The movie begins on a very youthful and chirpy note which it maintains right till the end. Throughout the movie you would be giggling, laughing or guffawing and will eventually leave with a smile on your face.
Taking a rather regular plot, very much on the lines of the evergreen DDLJ, the movie starts with the routine mischievous boy meets girl living up her last moments of freedom, before getting married to the boy of her father’s choice blah blah blah. But the way this story has been treated by the Director Shashank Khaitan and is team is very refreshing. Not for one moment would you feel that it is actually a rip off of DDLJ and not for one moment are you bored. It doesn’t drag at all !!!
I especially loved the way facebook and skype was mentioned and used in the story in small instances making this a very NOW movie.
Varun Dhavan keeps surprising us with a brilliant performance as the lovable boy. I am sure he is making his father very proud. This movie has also managed to give him a certain scope of being tested the emotional scenes and he clears them off with flying colors.
Alia Bhatt with her special brand of “dumb” is charming as ever. She has a fantastic screen presence and after giving a very sober performance in Highway, she is back to being the regular bubbly chirpy girl. This movie establishes Aliya Bhatt as someone who is in for a long haul. She might be called dumb by the whole world, but the girl is making some great choices in picking scripts.
The supporting starcast has no famous names in it, but they have done a fantastic job. Long gone is the time when the supporting actors were ignored. Humpty’s friends are as funny as Humpty is and they do deserve the due appreciation they should get. Especially loved as Sahil Vaid as Poplu. He never failed to draw a laugh from the audience, the dude is definitely talented.
But the surprise package of the movie is Ashutosh Rana, doing an excellent Amrish Puri to Aliya’s Kajol in a very different manner. It would be difficult for anyone to fill up that character so easily but Rana does it with ease, once again proving, that he is not just a snarling and gnawing villain, and his theater roots are still firmly instilled in him.
The songs are nothing to write home about, you tend to forget most of them by the time the movie is over. But they are not bad either. They keep the movie lively, are placed at perfect intervals and you do end up tapping your feet to a couple of them (Saturday Saturday *dhinchak*).
My fingers are so itching to write down the various twists and turns in the movie that I loved, but I don’t want to spoil the fun for you. I would highly recommend this movie for the college going crowd though I have a feeling you guys are already looking forward to get to watching it with your girlfriends (ahem don’t let her Dad know).
I wish the movie had done a few edits making it a complete family entertainer, but Parental Guidance is strictly advised and I am not sure how comfortable the parents would be with their kids watching a couple of Hashmi type scenes, if you get my drift ;). Though, they are not that long, and if you manage to close your kid’s eyes for just a moment …….
All in all, this is a non-stop fun entertainer.
And unlike the rhyme…….. This Humpty Dumpty definitely doesn’t fall off the wall.
