The singer has found herself entangled in the murky games of politics. She is under the scanner for making a remark that hasn’t gone down too well with certain intolerant politicians. On the occasion of Diwali, Lata Mangeshkar expressed her opinion about Narendra Modi and how he has always been a brother to her. She hoped from the bottom of her heart that he becomes the PM and that there couldn’t be a more auspicious day than Diwali to ask for her wishes to come true. But little did she know that her innocuous remark will be blown out of proportion and her achievements will be belittled by demanding to give away her prestigious awards.
Professor Janardhan Chandurkar, a senior member of the Congress party asked the singer to return the Padma Bhushan and Bharat Ratna to the government. The situation took quite an ugly turn when he reportedly said that he is willing to call an agitation against her for supporting an anti-secular guy like Modi.
The BJP and the Shiv Sena have been supporting the singer’s views. They have been trying to convey Chandurkar that the awards are not owned by his grandfather that he is making such unreasonable demands from the singer. The rival parties have also been making clear that Lataji can have whatever opinion she wants to, that doesn’t give anybody the right to point fingers at the accolades she has won over the years and humiliate her.
It’s a shame the way the senior artist is treated for speaking her mind. ‘Tolerance’ seems to be a word that doesn’t exist in the dictionary of a few politicians.
