Three detective movies are slated to release in 2014
There was a time when Bollywood was only making heavily dramatic movies in the 70s and 80s and soon the season changed to romance and love in the 90s. While we welcomed the millennium with much joy Bollywood once again changed its focus to comic capers; this period can also be called the Govinda era. Then who could forget the era of superheroes out of which only Krrish seems to have survived. Let’s not even get into Ra.One and Drona.
So after trying all sorts of genres Bollywood has now its heart set on playing the detective. Not one, not two but three movies are slated to release next year based on the same topic. And what’s more we will have three different kinds of detectives showing off their snooping around skills.
It was Ranbir Kapoor who first announced Jagga Jasoos, a movie he is co-producing with Anurag Basu. It’s a joint venture for their new production house called Picture Shuru Productions and Ranbir has said this movie would be very much like Indiana Jones meets Tintin. It will also be a musical with a detective concept which is little hard to imagine but if he says so!
The two also plan to turn this into a franchise, just like Sherlock, and even make TV films and cartoons of Jagga Jasoos. I am totally piqued by Ranbir’s plans and truly believe that he can pull off a Tintin with much ease. His acting capabilities and goofy looks will surely help him in being a great detective. What’s more he has even signed on Katrina Kaif to play opposite him. This would be their third movie together and now with their real life romance on the peak, fans are in for a treat! The movie goes on floors in November.
After an excellent debut in Kai Po Che, Sushant Singh Rajput has been roped in to play Byomkesh Bakshi in Dibakar Banerjee’s next. Set in Kolkata in the 1940s this film will probably have a serious approach and Sushant is already taken a preparatory leave to get to learn more about his character. While Byomkesh Bakshi is a fictional character from a novel written by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, many films and TV shows have already been made on it. Dibakar agrees to have taken few pointers from the novel and considering Sushant’s strong acting prowess doing this role shouldn’t be that difficult for him.
The latest to join this detective party is none other than Vidya Balan! She too will be seen playing Bobby Jasoos in Dia Mirza’s production. It is said she’s the first actress to play a detective’s role in Bollywood which just makes me wonder how it took them so much time to come up with a female detective! Surely there were many actresses in the past who could have acted like a Jasoos and frankly who better than a woman to do a little snooping around? We have it on our blood really.
Like always Vidya probably will excel in this role too but the title, Jagga Jasoos and Bobby Jasoos will create conflict for both producers and fans. Both the movies are to begin shooting in November and will have a release in 2014 around the same time.
So whose detective skills are you looking forward to watch? Who do you think will become THE Jasoos of 2014? Tell us in the comments below!
