Happy Birthday Rishi Kapoor!

When the world first saw a chubby little boy romancing young Dimple Kapadia in the film Bobby, no one knew that he will soon make the girls swoon to his rhythm. Rishi Kapoor has given 40 years of his life to Bollywood and after making a debut as child artiste in his father Raj Kapoor’s movie ‘Mere Naam Joker’, he grew up to portray some memorable roles. After taking a short break when Chintuji, as he’s fondly called by his peers, made a comeback we just fell more in love with him.  As today he celebrates his 61st birthday and a movie (Besharam) ready for release, we take a look at our favourites from Rishi Kapoor’s second innings.

Fanaa: In this movie, Rishi Kapoor played the father of Kajol, for whom too this was a comeback of sorts. His portrayal of a loving father who stands ready to protect his daughter from Aamir Khan was praiseworthy. Our favourite scene was the one in which he played Antakshri with Aamir.

Namastey London:  Yet again he played a father’s role and this time to feisty Katrina Kaif. His character is of a typical NRI father who wants to see his daughter married to an Indian man before she forgets her roots. Rishi Kapoor managed to fuse some humour in his character and that’s what we loved the most about this movie.

Love Aaj Kal: In this movie Rishi Kapoor played the role of a cafe owner who would often be seen sharing his love story with Saif Ali Khan, a non-believer in love. He made his character affable, loving and the best part was the coming back of Neetu and Rishi Kapoor on silver screen after 30 years. Woot!

Do Dooni Chaar: Now that the beautiful couple was already seen once in LoveAaj Kal, a full-fledged movie was kind of expected. And how graciously they managed their on-screen chemistry even after so many years! The movie revolved around a middle-class family who look for quicker ways to earn money. The movie pleased the critics and even earned a National Film Award for Best Hindi movie. We were glad to see the two reminisce old days and deliver their one of the best performances together.

Agneepath: Leaving his goody father roles behind, Rishi Kapoor donned the role of Rauf Lala in Karan Johar’s epic remake of Agneepath. The way he got into the skin of his character and portrayed the ruthless and cruel Rau sent shivers down our spines but more importantly showed the true versatility of Rishi Kapoor.

Student of the Year: After playing the toughie Rauf Lala, Rishi Kapoor once again surprised us with his colourful and charming role in Student of the Year as Dean Yoginder Vashisht. For the first time Rishi Kapoor attempted to play a gay in a movie and we can say he was utterly good at it! The way he would hold command over his students but also let his hair down to dance in the song Radha, made us wonder what other talents does he have hidden away from us?

With his forthcoming movie Besharam, for the first time Rishi, Neetu and Ranbir Kapoor will be seen together in one frame. We are already excited to witness what the Kapoor family has in store for us, are you?
