Ek Villain Movie Review: Director Mohit Suri Delivers Sensible Entertainment!

Reviewing Ek Villain. There is a good buzz about the movie given the suspense generated by smart marketing. Music has already been appreciated. Riteish Deshmukh’s performance as a villain…

The suspense is over!

Ek Villain has released and holds true to the promise of being an exciting romantic thriller! All that curiosity generated during the promotions about who the real villain is in the movie has been placed to rest. Master Director of musical thrillers, Mohit Suri has yet again delivered with a movie which falls in the category of a sensible entertainer.

The story is about a dreaded gangster Guru (Siddharth Malhotra) who works for his boss Remo Fernandes in Goa. A chance meeting with a fun-loving vivacious girl, Aisha (Shraddha Kapoor) makes him change his ways and love blossoms between the two. With dreams of a love-filled peaceful future, both of them move to Mumbai where twisted circumstances put a break on their romantic journey. Aisha is murdered and the beast in Guru is awakened again for revenge! It doesn’t take long for him to find the murderer in Rakesh (Riteish Deshmukh) but after confronting him, he gets baffled! He is unable to believe that a man as simple as Rakesh can do such a gruesome act! What happens next is Guru able to take the revenge, is Rakesh really the killer with some motives or is he just a psychopath who kills for the love of it, is what the movie is all about.

The plot of the movie is lifted from a Korean flick, I Saw The Devil, but the similarity ends there. Writer Tushar Hiranandani has adapted the flick to Indian sensibilities and added new tones and dimensions to it. Mohit Suri has played in this genre of dark sensibilities and characters before and hasn’t done a path breaking work here.

When we talk of performances, Siddharth has shown some improvement but he still doesn’t fit into the role of a gangster. Compared to his earlier flicks which were light hearted rom-coms, this one required a lot of depth and maturity. Wish he had performed better! Shraddha is looking cute and beautiful in her short but decent performance; nothing different from her Aashiqui2 role. However, Riteish Deshmukh is someone who has tried his hand at something totally different than what he has been doing till date. He might not be looking as menacing or dark as the character required but he is not that bad as well. Full marks for making an attempt to break out of his comic image!

Music is already a hit, cinematography is cool, action is restrained but impactful and in short, movie is definitely a watch for those who crave for something different if not spectacular or mind-blowing!

Do enjoy this edge-of-the-seat thriller this weekend; it is still better than many of the brain-dead flicks offered to us!
