A detective’s life is full of thrills and dangers and excitement.
To get a chance to have a look at it as an outsider is always an interesting opportunity!
Now, if that detective is a woman and someone as beautiful and spunky as Vidya Balan, the fun doubles up! With this thought in mind, producer-actress Dia Mirza with her boyfriend-cum-partner Saahil Sangha and Reliance Entertainment made this thoroughly commercial entertainer, Bobby Jasoos.
As seen in the trailers, the movie is an out and out Vidya Balan show! However, it is not a typical detective movie as the first time director; Samar Sheikh has tried to balance it out with a lot of drama and equivalent doses of comedy in it. That could be the reason that at some places it disappoints, particularly the second half of the movie.
The movie is based in Hyderabad which has become a character in itself with some spectacular cinematography by Vishal Sinha who previously captured cities of Varansi in Ranjhanaa and Issaq! In the city famous for its delicious biryani, Bilkis Khan (Vidya) lives in her middle-class dwelling with her parents who always oppose her childhood dream of becoming a detective. Not the one to take rejection from parents, society and work place lying down, Bilkis decides to open her own detective agncy. The help comes from her friend-turned-lover TV journalist Tassavur (Ali Fazal) and a new journey starts to achieve her dreams. Slowly the cases starts trickling down and soon she finds herself in a case that changes her whole life. As much as the movie talks about Bilkis’s dreams, it also somewhat unconvincingly deals with a touchy topic of father-daughter relationship.
The attempt to make it a mass entertainer by covering whole range of emotions makes the film a bit boring! Also, performance wise, we have seen Vidya in far better roles in Kahani and The Dirty Picture. Here, she does an earnest job but not to the best of her potential. Her different disguises definitely bring a smile on the face and it seems like a cakewalk for Vidya. Ali Fazal has given a rock-solid performance as a vulnerable simple guy given that this is a female-centric film. Supporting cast of such heavy-weights as Supriya Pathak, Rajendra Gupta, Tanvi Azmi, Zarina Wahab has done an impressive job. Shantanu Moitra’s music is decent and doesn’t look out of place.
Only if the family drama was cut down a bit and more attention was given to the thrilling elements of jasoosi, the film would have gone to a different level altogether. Still, it is not a bad film and can definitely be a one-time watch for the fact that it is India’s first female-detective centric film!
