Are the internships actually learning processes or are they some sort of exploitation processes? Yes it is exploitation when work is free or for peanuts.
Unemployment problem we all are aware of. Over the past years we saw the recession problem draining this country off its skill opportunities.
In fact a big reason for Modi’s victory was a large number of educated yet unemployed youth wanted the change.
We have post graduates, skilled youth who are still finding it hard to get a job.
Cost cutting and layoffs happening in the companies, recruitment seems like a far-fetched reality.
The graduates are skilled and qualified but not experienced and hence it is the best way to employ them and give them the exposure in the internship process.
But is this some sort of process where you get skilled work for free?
Are the internships actually learning processes or are they some sort of exploitation processes?
Yes it is exploitation when work is free or for peanuts. Companies think they are doing a huge favour by giving exposure and internships.
The freshers also work double the amount in the hope of a permanent selection and think of the exposure as some sort of a career scope.
Some companies even make their interns take Xerox copies, deliver hard drives and pen drives or sometimes even make them serve water.
Please understand am not belittling the act of serving water. The profile needs to suit. If the internship is for the house keeping section then fine but if someone joins as an intern in a profile that requires writing or organizational skills then it really doesn’t make sense.
The interns won’t complain as they need to maintain the good image but this need to stop.
It is high time the companies stop acting as per their whims and fancies and take the interns seriously.
The interns are supposed to maintain a low profile and blindly follow the orders from boss but who keeps a tab on the companies?
Cost cutting doesn’t really give any company the right to exploit any fresher. Free work is a big ‘no no’ and any company that empowers freshers for free work should be blacklisted.
The work hours and the profile of the interns should be clearly drafted and the process needs to be more transparent.
Who keeps a tab on the companies on how they are treating their interns? Proper record should be maintained on the growth of interns in a company.
