Former girlfriend of Rory McIlroy, Wozniacki advanced to the finals when China’s Peng Shuai broke down and retired in the second set, while trailing 7-6(1), 4-3.
After the match, Wozniacki stated that Serena is ‘a good friend’ and would do everything possible to reclaim her first ever Grand Slam against a favourite at the Flushing Meadows. It has been an upside down summer for the Dane.

But the former world number one faces a sturdy test in Williams with whom she trails 1-8 in all meetings, losing in three sets twice just before the U.S. Open, that too in the semis at Cincinnati and the quarterfinals in Montreal. On the other hand, Serena Williams is out to create history.
The two-time US Open champion will be looking to add a third title and add another elusive Grand Slam to her list of championships. The meeting between the duo will be a sort of emotional complex. Caroline Wozniacki had lent support to Williams during the latter’s serious health problems in 2011 and Serena returned the favour by offering support to the Dane after the eminent tragedy to the McIlroy.
In the post match conference, Williams dreamt of this contest. She said, “She obviously wants to win and go for her first grand slam, and I want to win and try to make a little history.” But Williams, who is eyeing a 18th, slam singles to match up the legendary Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova must not expect a walk in the park. After all, heartbreaks does make an individual stronger and mentally fitter!
