When I think about the best moments I’ve spent in canteen, a number of images come to my mind. And that, makes me nostalgic. They say, canteen is the one of the best places to hangout, which definitely makes it one of the best parts of our college life. Why just college? I hail from a town located in northern part of the country, where the concept of higher secondary section and junior college being the same thing, is not very prevalent.
Though we had a canteen in the school, we never really got to know its relevance. Relevance in terms of hanging out with friends, in terms of talking about things concerning youth, in terms of gossiping about relationships etc. For us, canteen used to be the last resort to a change from the daily dabba our moms used to give (love her for that, but you’ll agree that it does get monotonous at times).
All we used to do in the canteen was talking about syllabus, practicals and classes, not to forget the faculty’s way of teaching. I confess that I gave more attention to my samosa chaat than to Calculus. But in all this do you think that I missed sitting with my bunch and gossiping about all the silly things in the world, in a coveted spot like canteen? No.
Canteens are probably considered as a port for all those who wish to spend quality time with college crushes(wink), for the popular kids to add new members to their fan club and also for those nerdy ones to show off how much they scored in latest tests. Nevertheless, my friends and I did all this in our usual spots and never let the phenomena of canteen affect us.
True, that when I first joined junior college, I too like the rest of freshers cribbed about absence of a canteen. However, even after a canteen was constructed and we (me and a couple of my friends) became a regular visitor of the place, nothing affected our ways of enjoying without a popular hangout place. It’s not like students from colleges which do not have a canteen don’t enjoy their college life. They do. At times, more than the others.
