Mad In India First Episode: Chutki Doesn’t Quite Manage to Strike a Chord!

As the episode gained momentum, my expectations soared higher. But I fell flat on my face sooner than I could imagine. Sunil Grover’s Mad In India lacks that ‘something’ that will keep you hooked on to your TV screens.

An inane confab between Manish and Ramdev pretty much covers the first half of the episode. Paul makes Ramdev do his signature ‘yoga’ exercise, of rolling him stomach inside-out, and Manish takes a dig at him by comparing his flexible tummy with a Lassi-churning machine.

Baba sung his own praises, Manish applauded; that’s how the episode simply flew by.

And then entered the most awaited character of the show, Chutki played by Sunil Grover appeared in his usual small-town girl avatar. Let’s just say she had the same mannerisms, the same body language which she adopted on Comedy Nights With Kapil. But in Mad In India, there’s no one to overshadow her, there’s no one stealing her glory – Gutthi comes in a new packaging, and she performs her heart out in front of the audience.

But somehow I don’t see a differentiating factor yet.

We are so accustomed to the standard script followed by the goofy family members of Comedy Nights With Kapil, keeping us engrossed with their funny antics – it’s like you are watching a real family sitcom, and not one of those typical comedy chat shows. The format of Mad In India, with Manish doing the whole ‘Shekhar Suman Style Movers & Shakers’ hosting looks very banal and repetitive.

And somewhere Gutthi is incomplete without the madness that took place in Kapil Sharma’s house.

Even though, Sunil Grover has the absolute monopoly, he fails to carry the show solely on his two delicate shoulders.

But the one thing that’s truly worth the mention is that the show doesn’t restrict to inviting Bollywood celebs. I will still give this one a benefit of doubt.

But I just hope they manage to accumulate enough mojo to compete with Comedy Night With Kapil.
