A Resting Expressionless Face – Bane Of The Socially ‘Happy’ Individual

In medical terms, expressionless face is often referred to as ‘flat effect’. Basically, everyone hates it.

If you carry one such expression (…or lack of it) every time you meet other people, be prepared to receive a lot of flak.

If you don’t know what a it face is, see Twilight star Kristen Stewart. You must be aware about the criticism she receives for the look she carries. Any picture where she smiles is subject to witty puns.

Nevertheless, here are the struggles of people with an expressionless face –

Every new person you meet thinks if you are incapable of smiling. Some even go to an extent of speaking their mind directly, in the process condemning you, in a way.

It is unable for people to read you. On the inside, you may be having the happiest day, but your face would suggest something opposite.

You are constantly subject to questions such as ‘are you having a bad day’, ‘something wrong with you’, ‘do you need something’ or ‘are you mad at me’, to name a few.

In return, you are forced to smile wryly, maybe even give them a head bobble suggesting everything is good.

People begin intervening into your personal life. Some even question your happiness and try to ‘crack the code to get you out of a gloomy state of mind’.

There comes a time when you become sick of lame questions. On instances, you actually give them a stern expression, which they mistake for another bitch face and continue messing with you.

Your workstation comprises of post it notes containing messages from your colleagues asking you to smile more.

The attention you get for being “expressionless” forces you to assess yourself.

And when you realise you do have an expressionless face, you try making faces finding an alternative look that could perhaps suit you the best.

Your friends and colleagues tend to misinterpret you even if you are being polite. Again, reading you is difficult for them.

When you get to know a person well enough, they sometimes reminisce meeting you the first time stating, “The first time I met you, I thought you were an ass” (or something on those lines).

However, it is your face at the end of the day and you realise it has been like that for too long to change it. So you accept it for the way it is and stay alive!
